Efficacy of Nicotiana Plumbaginifolia (solanaceae) Leaf Extracts as Larvicide against Malarial Vector Anopheles
نویسنده
چکیده
The best way to control mosquito borne diseases is to control the mosquito population. The present study was executed to evaluate the mosquito larvicidal activity of Nicotiana plumbaginifolia leaves against malarial vector Anopheles stephensi.Crude extracts and three different solvent extracts were bio-assayed against An. stephensi larvae. LC50 and LC90 values were determined appropriately. Qualitative phytochemical tests were also done. Statistical justifications were drawn through Log-probit, regression and ANOVA analyses. Effects of bio-active fractions on some of the non-target water fauna were also examined. Crude extract was considerably mosquito larvicidal. Only ethyl acetate extractives exhibited larvicidal activity amongst all solvent extractives. Cent percent mortality of 1, 2 and 3 instars larvae was noticed within 72 h at 50 ppm concentration. Leaves contained tannins, steroids and flavonoids. Non-target organisms were non-responsive to bioactive fractions. N. plumbaginifolia leaves bear the potentiality to control An. stephensi larvae in a target specific way.

The leaf extract of Solanum trilobatum (Solanaceae) was tested under laboratory conditions for oviposition deterrent and skin repellent activities against the adult mosquito Anopheles stephensi. Concentrations of 0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1% reduced egg laying by gravid females from 18 to 99% compared to ethanol-treated controls. In skin repellent tests, concentrations of 0.001, 0.005, 0.0...

Vector control is the foremost step to diminish the mosquito borne diseases as the proper vaccinations are yet to develop against those obnoxious diseases. After many resistant cases, it is important to develop other sources of eco-friendly insecticides. The present piece of study was designed to evaluate the mosquito larvicidal efficacy of Operculina turpethum against malarial vector Anopheles...

The efficacy of leaf extracts of Momordica charantia and Bacillus thuringiensis has been proven against larvicidal and pupicidal activities of the malarial vector, Anopheles stephensi. The present study investigated the larvicidal and pupicidal activity against the first to fourth instar lavae and pupae of the laboratory-reared mosquitoes, An. stephensi. The plant extract showed larvicidal and ...

Methanolic extracts of leaves and seeds from the chinaberry tree, Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae) was tested against mature and immature mosquito vector Anopheles stephensi Liston (Diptera) under laboratory condition. The extract showed strong larvicidal, pupicidal, adulticidal, antiovipositional activity, repellency and biting deterency. The M. azedarach seed and leaf extracts were used to dete...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Aedes aegypti, Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus are vector mosquitoes of dengue, malaria, and filariasis, respectively. Since no vaccine is available to treat these diseases, the control of the main mosquito vectors is essential. As conventional insecticides have limited success, plants may be alternative larvicidal agents, since they contain a rich source of...
